{GIFTS. SKILLS. WORTH. Running a creative business }

If you are a friend or client of mine it is not news to you that I am a
{PHOTOGRAPHER}
 If you are a stranger coming across my blog then this is news to you! Well, I am. I am a photographer. A business owner. An artist. A creator. A memory preserver. And many other things that go beyond my job.

It took me awhile to call myself a photographer. With a degree in Graphic Design from the University of Sioux Falls, I have had much training in the areas of Adobe Creative Suite, a few photography classes and all of those fancy design terms like composition & rule of thirds. My education and my experience paved the way for me to be able to explore photography further. Honestly though, there are so many amazing photographers in this world, and specifically in our area that I often found it difficult to say "YES, I AM a photographer." as I felt I lacked experience or the "DEGREE" to prove it. In fact, my first camera was BORROWED most of the time, from my very gracious and supportive Sister-in-law, Karla. She allowed me to use hers while I explored the beginning stages of this adventure. That's love.

While I am always learning, and have learned so much since I first picked up a camera, I have also put so much time and effort into late nights learning, hours of experimenting, & many many many free sessions to come to this point. I feel as though I am able to call myself a PHOTOGRAPHER now. Not an expert, not perfect, but this IS my lively hood & this IS my joy & and this IS what feeds my family and provides for those things called BILLS that we all have.

I grew up with parents that owned their own businesses and still do. Remembering many amazing times, and some pretty tough times, wading through the trials that come along with writing your own paycheck & to be thankful if writing your own paycheck was even an option. I think it is honorable to own a business and that you can be so totally blessed by the freedom it can bring, if you are lucky ;)

That being said, I do not have direct deposit on the 1st and 15th. I don't show up to work, do my thing and come home. I wear all of the hats from the boss, to the accountant, to the manual labor, to the payroll etc and most of those things are not glamorous or my God given skill sets but they must be done. Overhead, taxes, keeping up with equipment, EXPENSIVE equipment etc. all parts of this job that are necessary to keep going.

One of those jobs is learning to say no. Learning that this is a business and if I give into this to help you, at what cost does it affect my family? I didn't always think that way. I wanted so much to just have everyone be happy and have a product even if it meant it was at the expense of my family. (which I wasn't aware of, and now am)

I still LOVE giving back. I believe that I have this gift for not just the ability to bring income to my family but also bring Joy to others and sometimes that means offering my skills out of the goodness of my heart for the sake of loving on someone else. I so so enjoy that and will continue to do so.

{SO MUCH GOES IN TO EACH SESSION!}
*Each session is thought out & planned with the highest quality and experience in mind all while keeping it economical. {I could go on and on about Department store photography pricing vs quality, comparing to mine but I won't.}

*My family steps up and takes River, my almost 3 year old so that I can work in the evenings while my husband works also. That means planning days/hours ahead, packing him up and taking him to another place and sometimes staying there late. He is such a trooper! AND I have the best family and friends who happily take him in so that I can keep on working! <3

*My job doesn't stop after the session is over either. Post processing, editing, tweaking, and creating with LOVE are also hours I continue to work so that the product I provide is not just a service, not just a paycheck but also a product that you will hopefully love for many many years and be so thankful you have.

{I AM HONORED.} I have the most amazing clients. So many have stuck with me from the very beginning and continue to support me as I grow. I have made friends through this adventure that I can't imagine not having in my life.

Originally I was sitting down to write a blog about the frustrations of people not valuing my time and skill and I actually am finding myself feeling otherwise THANKFUL. I am truly blessed by all the sweet faces I have gotten to capture and feeling more honored than jaded. Thank you God, for making me aware of your presence and the blessing you have placed in my life by giving me this {GIFT}.

THE "DIY. NO SEW. RE-PURPOSED SCARF. HEADWRAP. "

I have two sisters who do great things with their hair. They can whip it up into a top knot, leave it down straight or curled and no matter how they do it, they always end up looking amazing and like it was their plan all along.

Then there is me.

I'm a pretty simple girl when it comes to my hair. 5 minutes max, up in a ponytail and it's not always pretty, but it gets the job done!

Today was nearly 95 degrees and so we ventured out to buy a pool for our backyard. Although the temp was high, hose water is FREEZING. By the end of the afternoon our hot water tank was EMPTY which left me with no means to shower unless I wanted to enjoy a cold one.

All of that to brings me to the reason I am making this post!

THE "DIY. NO SEW. RE-PURPOSED SCARF. HEADWRAP. "

Looking at my mess of a hair situation, paired with needing to leave the house in minutes, I went straight into strategic, creative thinking mode.

I wonder what I would look like with a headwrap?!
I don't own a single headwrap so I guess I better make one!

I grabbed a scarf that is lightweight and has an awesome pattern that I have always loved. This scarf is perfect for this project but it never did lay right when used for its original purpose.

Here are a few images to help show you how incredibly simple. fast. and effortless these crazy things called headwraps are!

FIRST:

Cut a fabric piece that is 8 inches x 44 inches

This wrap will work best using a fabric that does not fray around the edges and is lightweight.

NEXT:

Fold your fabric piece in 3rds the long way. You can adjust the width of the fold to your liking.

{TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE!}

Do you feel like a knot or a bow today?

The 44 inch length allows you to decide between two different styles with just one wrap.

You can tuck the tales, or turn them into a sassy bow.

To create the knot look, bring the tails around to the top of your head and tie a knot.

Then, just simply tuck the tails so that they are hidden and your Knot wrap is COMPLETE! No sewing. Quick. Easy.

{THAT'S A WRAP!}

{ARROW ROSS STATEMA} Why we named you Arrow.

{ARROW ROSS STATEMA}

PSALM 127: 4
"Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one's youth."

PSALM 18:14
"He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy, with great bolts of lightening he routed them."

Powerful? yes!

{A few words by Uncle Chris}
Chris had envisioned Arrow as having a "straight to the truth, straight to the point personality." Instead of like River, who is creative and has innovative statement, this babe will be quite literal and precise." WOW.
- Amen Uncle Chris!

{A few words by Liz}
"An arrow is PRECISE and SHARP. A tool for battle. A powerful weapon. God already has a plan for him, despite what others might expect him to be or do. God already has calling for him to be a Son of God and a Warrior for Christ."

At this point I am crying. Amazed by my family and one of my best friends who are speaking {life} and {destiny} over our unborn baby boy. Humbled. Blessed. Honored.

We chose Ross for Arrow's middle name, as this is Ben's middle name. I have a feeling their personalities are going to be a lot the same. <3

River was named after PSALM 46: "There is a River whose streams make glad the city of God" - River is just this to all of us. He has proven his name to be defining and powerful. Now we have Arrow, also named after a PSALM. AMAZING!

Dear Baby Boy,

Within days of knowing you, we shared with the world your existence.
On Thanksgiving day we put your Big Brother River in a shirt that said "ONLY CHILD: EXPIRING AUGUST 2013"

Your Aunties were in TOTAL SHOCK. No one expected your arrival and you left everyone with jaws wide open and completely speechless!

Obviously because they were excited ;)

Daddy and I are so {HONORED}. We are honored because God chose us to not only love one perfect little boy, but now two perfect little boys.

Our greatest desire is to raise you honoring your gifting, your calling & teaching you how incredible God has been and always will be in your life. Allowing you to know Him completely.

Coming up with your name was a collaborative effort over text between your Momma's friend Liz, Auntie Lynds, Uncle Chris, your Daddy and myself.

We had been struggling to find the perfect name, but after this conversation we were convinced that this was YOUR NAME indeed.

We love you so deeply already & we cannot wait to see how God uses you to teach & love us, just as your Brother has.

River's Oasis.

River will be {THREE} in June. I have said before that I can't believe that 3 years have passed so quickly, but I am so not sad about it. He has been incredible since day one, and he just keeps getting more so. He brings me to happy tears daily. I can't wait for the next 3 years and beyond, I can only imagine they will be filled with amazing-ness.

In addition, River is going to be a {BIG BROTHER!} We are excited for July to be adding Baby boy #2. That being said, we have done a juggle of rooms in this house and so I am going to post images of River's Oasis. Quite possibly the best room in the house. Enjoy!
